A summary of public announcements and reporting as of October 29, 2026. Follow the linked sources for full details.
October was the month the big platforms stopped debating whether AI agents should shop for people and started setting the rules. Walmart, Shopify and BigCommerce all opened their stores or catalogs to outside shopping agents, while Amazon went the other way. If you run a Magento 2 store, none of this changes your checkout tomorrow, but it does show where product discovery is heading.
What happened in October
- Meta's Muse agent. According to CNBC, Meta's personal agent can search retail sites, surface products and prepare a purchase that the shopper confirms on an approval card. Meta announced retail partners including Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair and Best Buy.
- Shopify, October 13. The Verge reports that Shopify now lets shoppers connect any AI agent to their Shop account, not just partner agents, giving agents access to over a billion listings. Checkout runs through Shop Pay inside the conversation, shoppers can set rules such as budget limits, and every purchase must be approved.
- Walmart, October 21. Walmart announced Agent Profiles and an Agent Gateway. Shoppers approve agent purchases by default, agents never receive card details, and agents that break Walmart's terms get blocked.
- BigCommerce and Cloudflare, October 21. Commerce.com announced WebMCP support for BigCommerce stores, turned on by default for eligible merchants. A shopper's browser agent can search the store's real products and prices, fill a cart, and hand back a link so checkout still happens on the merchant's storefront.
- Amazon. Axios reports that Amazon blocked Muse from browsing and buying on its platform, saying it had not authorized Muse to access customer accounts, scrape data or process transactions.
Where Adobe Commerce and Magento stand
Adobe has not made a matching October launch, but it has stated its direction. In February it committed to supporting the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) from Google and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) from OpenAI, on top of Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). At Summit it introduced a Commerce MCP server that gives developers access to catalog, cart, pricing, inventory, checkout and order data so they can build their own shopping assistants or connect third-party agents. Check Adobe's documentation for what is available on your edition and version, especially if you run Magento Open Source rather than Adobe Commerce.
Three patterns worth noticing
- The shopper stays in control. Every one of these launches keeps a human approval step before money moves. Agents find and compare; people confirm.
- The merchant wants to keep checkout. BigCommerce's version deliberately hands the cart back to the storefront, and Amazon refused to let an outside agent in at all. Owning the customer relationship is the point of contention.
- Accurate catalog data wins. Agents compare structured facts: price, stock, size, compatibility. A store whose attributes are incomplete or inconsistent is harder for any agent to recommend correctly.
Axios also cites Coveo's 2026 Commerce Relevance Report, which found that only 16% of shoppers are currently comfortable letting an AI assistant find and buy products for them. Agentic shopping is real, but for now it is a small slice of retail.
What a Magento 2 merchant can do now
- Clean up your attributes. This helps outside agents, your own site search and any on-site assistant at the same time. Our attribute checklist for AI product discovery walks through what to fix first.
- Keep price and stock data reliable. Agents and assistants that quote a wrong price or an out-of-stock item cost you trust faster than a missing answer.
- Ask your agency or Adobe contact what UCP, ACP or MCP support would mean for your version before committing budget. Treat it as a roadmap question, not an emergency.
- Do not neglect your own storefront. Most shoppers still browse your site directly, and that is where you control the conversation.
Where Claspwell fits
Claspwell is not an agent protocol and does not connect your store to Muse, Shop or browser agents. It is a catalog-aware AI sales assistant that lives on your own Magento 2 or Hyvä storefront and answers shoppers from your synced catalog, so the conversation and the sale stay on your site. It installs typically in 3 days to 1 week once scope and access are ready. See how the Magento 2 AI chatbot works, or request an integration.
